Joseph Frost
Joseph Frost was born in Czechoslovakia in 1953. From an early age he displayed a natural talent for drawing and was encouraged by his father who was a highly skilled artisan.
On his arrival to Australia in 1974 he found a job as a picture framer at a gallery in North Sydney. Learning quickly he began to restore paintings for the gallery and, in his spare time began to paint seriously for the first time.
His early works were inspired by the Venetian artist Canaletto. By studying Canaletto's work and learning from his techniques he developed an eye for detail that was to become his hallmark.
His paintings of the early clipper ships, complete with accurate details of the rigging were soon to bring his work to the notice of the art buying public. These paintings together with his harbour scenes soon allowed him to become a full time professional artist. At this time he began his love affair with etching, a medium with which he had an immediate affinity.
In need of a new challenge Joseph moved to Numeralla (near Cooma, NSW) in 1980. Thie first experience of the Australian bush pened new vistas for him, stimulating the first of a series of magnificent landscapes. The softness of his morning scenes has become legend and together with an eye for detail cemented his reputation as a major force in contemporary Australian art.
Now a resident of NSW Southern Highlands, Joseph continues to develop the style and depth of his work, both in oils and etching. His original affinity with Sydney Harbour has drawn him back to paint the many bays and panoramas of Sydney.
Having exhibited widely throughout Australia his work is represented in private and corporate collections throughout the world. |
